War Cemetery Füchtenfeld (Camp Wietmarschen)

The prisoners of war who died in the Wietmarschen camp were usually buried in the cemetery in Dalum. After the Wietmarschen camp was liberated at the end of April 1945, a cemetery was established directly adjacent to the former camp site.

Today's Füchtenfeld/Wietmarschen war cemetery was established by the Soviet mission for 153 Soviet prisoners of war who died shortly before or after the liberation of the camp. The dead were buried in individual graves, the wooden grave markers were labelled with their names. An obelisk was also installed in the cemetery to commemorate the victims of National Socialism. Over time, the memorials were removed.

Around 150 unknown prisoners of war rest on the Füchtenfeld war cemetery today. Two Serbs and two Soviet citizens are known by name, who were transferred from the Protestant Reformed cemetery in Nordhorn to this war cemetery in November 1967.

The Nazi victims of the Emsland camps buried in the war cemeteries have a perpetual right of rest under the ‘Law on the Preservation of Graves and Victims of War and Tyranny’. The current design of the cemeteries was significantly influenced between 1951 and 1974. As at many other war cemeteries of the Emsland camps, the exact grave locations at the Füchtenfeld/Wietmarschen war cemetery can no longer be traced.
