"Wehrkreis VI" ("Military District VI")
The Esterwegen Memorial is a founding member of the network “Memorials and institutions commemorating prisoners of war in the former ‘Wehrkreis VI Muenster’”, abbreviated to “Network Wehrkreis VI". The military district, which existed until 1945 and had its headquarters in Muenster/Westphalia, was divided into the military replacement districts of Muenster, Dortmund, Duesseldorf and Cologne.
With the beginning of the attack on Poland in September 1939, the Wehrmacht set up a dense network of prisoner of war camps in the occupied territories and in the "Reich" itself, which was divided into so-called Wehrkreise. The prisoner of war camps in the Emsland and in the county of Bentheim were also part of this system. In addition to the main camps (Stalags) VI B Versen and VI C Bathorn with their branch camps (Oberlangen, Wesuwe, Fullen, Groß Hesepe, Dalum, Wietmarschen, Alexisdorf) and the officers' camps (Oflags) Oberlangen and Wesuwe, the associated “Wehrkreis VI Muenster” also included the prisoner of war camps mentioned below.
