  The volume accompanying the exhibitions at the Esterwegen Memorial offers a wide audience an overview of the history of the Emsland camps and places them in the context of the history of the Third Reich. The richly illustrated volume, which is based on current international archive research, presents previously unknown historical documents and photographs. The main focus lies on the hard forced labor, the life and suffering as well as the death of the prisoners. However, the volume also provides information about the perpetrators, profiteers and the civilian environment of the camps. It also describes the post-history of the Emsland camps as a complex process of remembrance that continues to this day.
