Library

The memorial's special library on the history of the Emsland camps and the National Socialist era in the Emsland and Grafschaft Bentheim is open to all interested parties. The library currently holds around 6,000 media units. The available titles can be viewed via the online catalog. The catalog also offers an extensive bibliography on the history of National Socialism in the region.

The Memorial's reference library is available during the Memorial's opening hours; consultation is only possible from Tuesday to Friday. If you book your visit in advance, the appropriate titles can be provided in advance.

The collection essentially comprises of:

  • the history of the Emsland camps
  • National Socialist persecution and
  • the culture of remembrance and memorial work.

Borrowing books is only possible to a limited extent, for example for research projects or final theses. No user account is required to search the catalog (OPAC) or to use the reading room.

 
 
Bibliography on the history of National Socialism in the region

The memorial's catalog also contains a bibliography on the history of National Socialism in the Emsland and Grafschaft Bentheim, compiled primarily by Natalia Wollny and Helmut Lensing. The bibliography provides an overview of the literature generally available on the subject of National Socialism in the region.

AGGB-Catalog

The library of the Esterwegen Memorial is a member of the Association of Memorial Libraries (AGGB). The joint online catalog AGGB includes all important special libraries on the subject of Nazi persecution. The working group was founded in 1998 on the initiative of the House of the Wannsee Conference Memorial and Educational Site, Berlin and the Topography of Terror Foundation, Berlin. It supports the work of libraries in memorials and related institutions through cooperation, professional exchange and further training.
