Visiting the memorial with children
The Esterwegen Memorial is a European memorial site that commemorates the violence and crimes committed in the 15 Emsland camps during the National Socialist era. The information we provide in our exhibitions is not designed for younger children. Various contents and photographs of prisoners and prisoners of war could be disturbing. We therefore only recommend a visit to the memorial for children over the age of 13.
For a visit with children aged 13 and over, it makes sense to prepare them for the visit. It is reasonable to assume that the historical context - i.e. the basic facts about Nazi persecution and the treatment of prisoners of war during the Second World War - are not sufficiently well known. Please also take time to talk to your children about their impressions after visiting the memorial.
